CLCP Youth Assembly and Guides’ Training

By Katherine Joyce Yu, YDT Coordinator

Last April 13-15, 2012, the Youth Development Team (YDT) brought together youth CLCers and guides from Iloilo, Davao, Cebu, Bicol, Laguna, Baguio, and NCR to the Youth Assembly (YA) and Guides’ Training held in Mirador Jesuit Villa, Baguio City. A total of 44 participants attended the said event.

The youth underwent a leadership module on the theme, “Ignatian Spirituality in the NET Generation.” The session started with activities that highlighted the three pillars of CLC: community, spiritual, and apostolic. After which, inputs on different leadership styles with particular emphasis on servant leadership were shared. This culminated into the “Great Baguio Challenge” activity that had the youth going around and interacting with the nearby communities to perform different tasks that challenged and honed their leadership abilities.

On the side of the guides, a module centered on the theme, “Building from the Basics,” was carried out as a follow-up to their Guides’ Training last June 2011. Sessions on the General Principles, on the Person of the Guide, Ideal YCLCers, Strategies on How to Conduct Prayer Sessions were held.  The guides bonded as they shared together experiences of handling youth.  The greatest realization for the guides is that guiding and guiding well is one of the best responses we can give to God’s call.

The YA was also graced with the presence of Fr. Manny Uy, SJ (ADZU CLC Batch ‘85) who took time off his tertianship to celebrate mass with the delegates.  He shared with us how CLC in college affected his own life choices and his eventual decision of becoming a priest.  He also mentioned how lucky this batch of participants was to have experienced YA in Mirador—a historic place in CLC’s journey in the Philippines.

The YA gave opportunities for the different communities to bond and learn from each other as well. The traditional “Community Night” where the participants in each region shared what they do in their own CLC communities through creative and unique presentations was held on the second night of the YA. On the third day of the YA, the delegates were given time off to enjoy Baguio City. With the assistance of Baguio Youth CLCers, the delegates roamed around the city, visiting popular tourist sites such as Burnham Park. Over bonfire and snacks, the youth and guides exchanged stories and developed new friendships with each other. It was truly a memorable experience—a testimony of how the spirit is alive and blazing in the hearts of our Youth CLCers.

The Youth Assembly and Guides’ Training will not be possible without the efforts of the YA Team. We thank Ms. Tinnah Dela Rosa (module consultant), Fred Yang, Roseanne Lee, Miel Penalosa, Suzy Martirez, Claire Sayson, Kat Yu and Je Ching Wu. Special thanks is also due to our guest resource person, Terence Ang, the current President for CLC-Philippines, for giving sample prayers sessions on contemplation, meditation and awareness/consciousness examen during the guides’ training.  We also thank the Mirador Staff for taking care of our needs, particularly Fatima and Virgie.
